There is a beautiful idea that grief does not become smaller with time; instead, slowly and gently, our life begins to grow around it.
In the beginning, grief can feel as though it occupies every available space, touching our mornings, our evenings, our memories, our bodies and even the smallest moments of an ordinary day. It can be difficult to imagine that life will ever feel spacious again, because the loss seems too large and the world we once knew has changed so completely.
Yet healing does not ask us to forget, move on or leave the people we love behind.
Instead, life gradually begins to grow around the grief, much like wildflowers and ferns growing around a stone that remains firmly embedded in the earth. The stone is still there, carrying its weight and its history, but it is no longer the only thing in the landscape. Around it, new experiences take root, laughter begins to return without betrayal, relationships deepen, purpose quietly reawakens, and hope pushes its tender shoots through places that once felt completely barren.
This does not mean that grief has ended, because there may still be days when it suddenly feels as large and overwhelming as it did at the beginning. A familiar song, a photograph, a date on the calendar or a fleeting memory can bring the ache rushing back, reminding us that love leaves a permanent imprint upon the heart.
But alongside that ache, there can also be growth.
We may discover a deeper compassion for others, a clearer understanding of what truly matters and a gentler way of holding both ourselves and those around us. We may begin to carry our loved ones differently—not only through tears, but through the ways we live, love, create, serve and remember.
Grief does not disappear, because love does not disappear.
Slowly and gently, however, life begins to grow around it, until the grief becomes one meaningful part of a much larger landscape—a landscape that still holds sorrow, but also carries beauty, purpose, gratitude and grace.
One moment at a time.
